Sid Dickens has not forgotten his roots. In his own words, the artist has said that sometimes, to find the ineffable first vision, one must return to the beginning. Ever present in his psyche is the potent memory of his spiritual home. Now a reality, the artist’s dream of creating a studio in the Queen Charlotte Islands has lent the excitement of his first inspirations to this new body of work. This season he takes us back to the deeply cracked and weathered look of his original works, revisiting his early appreciation and audacious use of rich, saturated color. He explains this re-visitation by his choice to experience a simpler way of living. Returning to the Queen Charlottes has reconnected Dickens to the charge of the land, of a communication with the senses and to a renewed acquaintance with the textural elements of stones, sea, sky and the detritus of the earth. For Sid, this remote island is a touchstone by which he embraces the essence of his artistic integrity. This spring of the year 2002, Sid Dickens is very excited to offer his unique distillation of these powerful influences. Color is a vital stimulant to the senses.
