Sid Dickens continues to demonstrate a sure touch in his contemporary articulation of our common artistic heritage of symbols, signs and stories. This collection is strongly sculptural, showing a confident return to the simplicity and tactile qualities of the first Memory Blocks. The Dickens seal on the tile sides commemorates this 10th Anniversary collection. This spring look forward to Sid Dickens' playful side. Known to enjoy a good practical joke, and not shy to engage his childlike spirit of adventure and playfulness, Sid brings us eight new styles focusing on his fascination with historic game boards and playing cards. People have played games on decorated boards since 3000 BC. Today we play games, watch games and view "reality" on television and computer screens but, technology has not replaced the handcrafted. We still share the communion of gathering around an ornamented game board or the pleasure of holding beautifully decorated cards in our hands. Dickens brings to life this fascination with games, reminding us of genuine fun and the simplicity of friends together taking turns. Nietzsche suggested that all adults should approach their work with “the seriousness of children at play”. We are glad that Mr. Dickens seems to approach his creative work with this attitude, keeping his collection vital and spontaneous while continuing to emphasize positive human values.
